In today’s world it seems as though nobody can agree on anything, just spend an evening watching cable news to see for yourself. As a society we view things differently and perhaps that is a quality that makes us strong. We come from different backgrounds, have different political views, attend different religious services and have different favorite pizza spots. Since 1989, however there is something that many of us have in common. We come home from work, relax and unwind while watching a show about nothing. The sitcom that debuted over 28 years ago, still to this day brings families and friends together to share a laugh. What is fascinating is not the fact that people almost wet themselves like poppy on the pee stained couch, laughing at their favorite episodes, but that the desire for “Seinfeld” still burns hotter than ever despite being off the air for over 20 years. You may go to a comedy club this weekend and listen to a stand up comic and laugh out loud, you may watch a sitcom currently running on a prime time network and laugh so hard it brings tears to your eyes….but if you heard those jokes over and over again for almost 30 years, would you laugh as hard as you did the first time? That is the magic that Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld have created. They have managed to bottle up people’s laughs and keep them fresh for over a quarter of a century.
While writing this post I asked myself the question “What is it that keeps the masses coming back for more?” “What is the secret that David and Seinfeld have managed to not only discover, but to excel at?” Sure the show is funny. That may be the understatement of the Newmanium. The real answer may be as complicated as asking for more bread from the soup Nazi or it may be as simple as understanding shrinkage after a dip in the pool. From my perspective however, they have put the answer right in front of our faces. It’s “a show about nothing”. Every single day people deal with the daily stresses of work, kids, health and just life in general. Every night when the work is done, the kids are put to bed and the long day finally seems to be winding down, people turn their brains off and put their stress in the rear view mirror…even if its only for a half hour. Enter Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine. For nearly 30 years that foursome has been there to ease the stress and give us a laugh after a day that it didn’t seem possible to even chuckle. Many words have been used to describe the sitcom throughout the years but the one that I feel should be right up near the top is “escape”. You cannot put a price on being able to put down the stockpiling bills and listen to Frank Costanza and Kramer bicker over the name for their new male breasts product ( I still think “manzier” has a nicer ring to it). If time has taught us anything it is that it is undefeated. There may come a day where the demand for “Seinfeld” is gone, when people no longer care about the foursome we have all come to love. It is sad to think about, but comfort may be taken in the fact that for nearly 30 years and counting we have gotten to put aside our worries if only for a half hour and just laugh. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld launched this powerhouse back in 1989, and yada yada yada may have stumbled upon a greater truth than they expected or intended to. That truth is that laughter, while quick and spontaneous…can last a lifetime. That is what is truly real and spectacular.
