Some of us eat to survive….others survive to eat. I am proud to say that I am a longstanding member of the “survive to eat” crew and I don’t plan on letting my membership card expire anytime soon. This week myself and my girlfriend Stephanie, who owns and operates the food blog “Bani & Chai” were fortunate enough to have our membership cards renewed when we were invited to a tasting at “Sweet Mama’s” in Stony Brook. If you are a Long Island resident and have heard the name before it is probably because the Stony Brook location is the 2nd location that has been opened by owner Marios Patatinis. Walking into the restaurant you may be hit with a feeling of nostalgia as the decor gives off a comforting vibe that will make you feel as though you are in your own mothers kitchen waiting for another home cooked meal. The walls are lined with old school 1950s era Coca Cola signs and other household ornaments that will make you feel as though you just stepped back into the comfort of your childhood home. The real fun begins however when you open the menu and see delicious option after delicious option. There is something for every craving and every palate on this eclectic menu. From breakfast to dessert “Sweet Mama’s” has you covered! Coming into the tasting we knew a little bit about “Sweet Mama’s” through word of mouth at there Northport location. One of the staples on the menu was the “Cookie Monster milkshake” Oh and did I mention that they also act as an ice cream parlor? I will get more into that later. Our tasting was at 10AM….Perfect time for a milkshake! As the gigantic concoction of delicious ice cream filled to the top of a huge stein glass that was coated in oreo cream, crushed oreos and a big delectable scoop of whipped cream on top arrived at our table, I knew this morning was about to get a whole lot better! Stephanie being the normal one in our relationship decided to get a Nitro Cold Brew coffee(mudslide), which was supplied by the company Sailaway coffee company. Coffee in the morning sounds normal right? Think again! The coffee filled mason jar arrived with delicious whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles piled on top as well as stuck to the mouth of the mason jar. Stephanie and myself sat there in morning milkshake heaven.
So there we were sipping our nutritious breakfast drinks, when the waitress came over and asked what it was that we would like to eat, When you see the menu you will understand how difficult of a question this is as limiting yourself to one option is like picking which child goes to college…(Stony Brook university is only 5 minutes up the road from the restaurant for the tyke that comes out on top.) Stephanie enjoys a breakfast that usually errs on the sweet side, where my breakfast preference is usually in the savory zone. So Marios brought us out 3 dishes to try so that we could get the best of both worlds. The first plate to hit the table was the “Funky Monkey” stuffed french toast which is a fitting name seeing as how the moment it hit the table I looked at it like a monkey looks at a banana in the zoo at feeding time. The “Funky Monkey” is thick graham cracker encrusted french toast that is stuffed to the gills with nutella cream cheese and bananas. Bananas and chocolate syrup are drizzled beautifully over the top of this plate to give it the final delicious touch. Mama may have made french toast when you were a kid, but she sure as heck didn’t do it like this. Delicious layer after delicious layer of nutella, cream cheese and bananas filled each forkful to the point that I almost strayed from my savory breakfast preference. That was of course until….the next plate hit the table.
The next plate that Marios brought over for us was the “Spicy Avocado Benny” which consists of 2 English muffins as the bed for 2 beautifully poached eggs which lye on top of a big heaping of avocado with spicy hollandaise sauce drizzled over the top. I am a huge fan of eggs benedict and have seen restaurants get creative with it before but something about this creation really blew me away. The key was the spicy hollandaise sauce which I have never seen before on an eggs benedict. The spiciness was not overpowering in any way. The flavor of the spicy hollandaise sauce mixed with the yolk from the poached egg and combined with the avocado just made this dish pop. This was my favorite dish of the trio we were served.
The final dish that Marios brought out for us was the plate that he deemed his favorite. California Avocado Toast. The dish consisted of a big piece of toast with delicious avocado generously smeared across and topped off with turkey bacon, greens and 2 sunny side up eggs. Sunny side up eggs send Stephanie into a frenzy with the prospect of yolk porn on the horizon. That’s right yolk porn! For the non freaks out there yolk porn consists of slicing the yolk and letting it run like the river wild all over its plate mates. This dish is perfect for yolk porn! The yolks coating of the toast, avocado and turkey bacon makes for a delicious dish that you can just pick up and dig into or go the proper route with a knife and fork. This dish offers a healthy option for those who may be watching there weight when visiting “Sweet Mama’s”.
Finally just when you think that “Sweet Mama’s” has shown you the best of what it has to offer, Marios invited us to the ice cream parlor section of the restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and now dessert. No matter what time of day or night “Sweet Mama’s has all of the bases covered. During our time talking with Marios it was evident that the food was not the only top selling point for “Sweet Mama’s”, Marios is a friendly, innovative owner who has big goals and a mind that is constantly thinking outside the box to think of different ways to make sure mama stays at the top of her game. If a restaurant is going to be successful with a vibe that is centered around making customers feel at home, the owner and staff have to be an integral part of that and “Sweet Mama’s” has the perfect front man in Marios. Stopping what he was doing to shake the hands of several customers as they walked through the door, Marios is quickly becoming a hit with the community in Stony Brook. One thing that is certain to make him a hit with the community members both young and old is his newest creation….Ice Cream Cereal Bowls! It begins with generous scoops of your ice cream of choice(4 flavors are made in house daily and the others are provided by Giffords ice cream) that is then blended with your favorite breakfast cereal. Once the two are blended together the bowl is prepared. The bowl preparation begins with a layer of cereal that is then coated by the delicious ice cream cereal blend that was just created. The bowl is completed with a big serving of whipped cream, a drizzle of hot fudge and topped off with what else….cereal! It is a unique and creative combination that I have not seen done before. The creation that me and Stephanie came up with was the Muddy Boots ice cream (vanilla, brownie bites and caramel) with Reeses Peanut Butter Puffs Cereal. Combining the meal that starts the day with the meal that usually ends the day is the out of the cereal box thinking that will keep “Sweet Mama’s” thriving for a long time. I highly recommend this restaurant to my readers of all ages. It is a great spot for families and friends to gather for a meal regardless of the time of day.
